The washer generally has a great influence on the quality of a bolted joint. High-strength pretensioned screw connections can be achieved with washers.
A high residual clamping force significantly prevents the risk of "loosening".
For a given preload force, a thinner bolt can be used. This results in a better ratio of clamp length to bolt diameter, which counteracts failure.
The quenched and tempered, smooth bolt head/nut contact ensures low and uniform friction factors even with repeated loosening and tightening.
Washers are only suitable for mechanical engineering bolts of strength classes 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9, not for structural steel bolts DIN 6914.
