The washer generally has a great influence on the quality of a screw connection. Highly pretensioned screw connections can be achieved with washers. A high residual clamping force considerably prevents the risk of "loosening". For a given preload force, a thinner screw can be used. This results in a better ratio of clamping length to screw diameter, which counteracts failure. The quenched and tempered, smooth bolt head / nut contact ensures low and uniform friction factors even with repeated loosening and tightening. Washers are only suitable for mechanical engineering bolts of strength classes 8.8 / 10.9 / 12.9, not for structural steel bolts DIN 6914.
